Yesterday MLB lost a legend. Don Zimmer made his Baseball debut July 2nd 1954 as an infielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He went on to play for many other teams the Cubs,Mets,Reds,LA Dodgers, and the Senators where he ended his career in 1965. He is also one of the mane reasons for the MLB Implementing rules over wearing a batters helmet after he was hit and fainted and woke up 2 weeks later thinking it was the day after the game.
His MLB achievements as a Player,Manager and Coach include 2x All Star 1961,6x World Series Champion 1955,59,96,98,00,NL Manager Of The Year 1989. He Maneged the Padres 1972-72,Red Sox 1976-80,Rangers 1981-83,and the Cubs 1988-91. He went on to coach the Montreal Expo 1971, San Diego Padres 1972, Boston Red Sox 1974-76, New York Yankees 1986, San Francisco Giants 1987 , Colorado Rockies 1993-95, New York Yankees 1996-2003, Boston Red Sox 1982,and ended his coaching at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2004-2014.
Don was Married to his high school sweet heart and they had one son who is now a scout for the San Francisco Giants. Zimmer lived baseball for over 66 years. He passed away June 4th 2014 in Florida from heart and kidney complications.He was 83 years old.
